Do Your Bit

There is a growing number of supermarkets offering recycling banks for various materials such as glass and aluminium - so why not take your paper along there too? How many bits of waste paper can you see around you, and how many of those could be recycled in the paper bank?

YES: Paper, Newspapers, Leaflets, Magazines

NO: Card, Envelopes, Catalogues, Phone Books

These need to go to a card bank instead. (Contact your local authority.)

What can you do to help?

Recycling Guide

What type of paper do you use the most of at home? Newspaper? Magazines?

Do you have a recycling bin at home where you put the waste paper ready to go to the paper bank? If you do, where do you keep the recycling bin? In the garage? In the kitchen? Outside?

How often do you go to the paper bank?

Where is your nearest paper bank?

  • How do you get there? In the car? Walk? On the bus?
  • Don't forget that many other items such as steel, green waste and bricks can also be recycled. Your local authority should be able to tell you where the nearest 'Tidy Tip' is
  • Recycling centres can vary from collection schemes so remember to separate your recycling according to your local collection or recycling centre's requirements

Energy Saving Tips

  • Use energy saving light bulbs
  • Clean your oven while it is still warm after removing food
  • Keep dirty dishes in the dishwasher until you have a full load, unless the machine has a partial load setting. You'll use less hot water and save electricity
  • Avoid repeatedly opening and closing the refrigerator
  • Iron fabrics requiring a low temperature setting first and work up to higher settings
  • Remember to turn off all appliances when not using them
  • Use draft excluders under doors where necessary
  • Insulate your attic to stop heat from escaping
  • Turn off televisions when they are not in use rather than leaving them on standby
  • Make sure that computers are shut down if not in use rather than leaving the screen saver on
  • Collect rainwater in buckets/collector drum and use the contents to water plants
  • Fit 'waterhogs' in the cystern to save water when flushing

Our top energy saving tip is...

Turn off your television video and DVD player as 80% of their energy consumption comes from when they are on standby
