Like all the world's resources, paper is a finite resource and we should recycle whenever possible. Here in the UK, we consume far more paper than some of our European neighbours - on average, each person in the UK consumes 198 kg of paper and board per year. Compare this to Poland where only 40 kg of paper and board are consumed per person per year, and you can see just how much we use.

British households are more likely to recycle their newspapers than glass, aluminium cans, plastic bottles or steel cans. But although 96% of people think that it is important to recycle material from their rubbish and two thirds think it is very important, only 13% of people say they regularly recycle most of their recyclables.

If everyone in the UK recycled all their newspapers and magazines it would save local authorities an estimated £100 million in waste and disposal costs every year.

  • 47% believe that local authorities should take the main responsibility for recycling
  • Nearly 90% of the public support it being made compulsory for their local authority to provide special bins to help households recycle
  • 65% of British people support legislation requiring everyone to recycle all their household recyclables
  • Only a quarter of all newspapers read in the UK are actually recycled; if everyone in the UK recycled all their newspapers and magazines it would save local authorities an estimated £100 million in waste and disposal costs every year. Source - www.tecweb.com

After use, paper can go down any of three routes - either recycling, incineration or landfill. The most economic and environmentally responsible is recycling. When you deposit your used papers into a waste paper bank, you are sorting the paper into grades before the merchant collects it. This is why you can only put certain papers into a particular bank. For details of your nearest recycling point contact your local council.

Many offices have a recycling scheme in place. Again the waste paper is usually segregated ready to be collected. If you work in an office where the paper is thrown into the bin why not persuade your employer to have the waste paper recycled? Contact your local council and they will be able to point you in the right direction.
